In elementary school, each of us had a chance to be the guest editor of the student newspaper. I can still remember the day I was called to the helm — I was out-of-my-mind excited, and that feeling about journalism just never went away.

It followed me through high school, then to college, where I was the managing editor of the Purdue student newspaper, then to the real world. During my first real reporting assignment for my hometown newspaper, I accidentally turned off the lights on a big room full of veterans during a somber ceremony. That was more than 10 years ago, and I'm still at it ... though less awkwardly, for the most part.
